Conservation partners from the Iowa Chapter of the Soil and Wate r Conservation Society (SWCS), Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation (IDALS-DSC), USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Iowa's local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) gather to form the Iowa Conservation Team during RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI is (The Des Moines) Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The conservation partners hand out free bananas, water and conservation-themed postcards, and display conservation education along the route.
What does the conservation team get from this? Over 10,000 cyclists from foreign countries and all 50 states will ride across just about all of the various terrain Iowa has to offer and have the opportunity to see the conservation accomplishments of conservation districts and partners. In 2008 the group handed out over 9,600 bananas (3,200 pounds), a team record 5,000 conservation-themed postcards were mailed worldwide, and hundreds of gallons of ice water with over 50 volunteer assisting!
While taking a break at the conservation tent, riders can read about conserving soil, wetlands, water quality, conservation systems, grasslands, woodland and wildlife. This is great opportunity for the Iowa Conservation Team to teach Iowans and visitors to Iowa about our efforts to conserve Iowa’s soil and water.
